Cotton defoliation has changed a lot over the years. New products have come into the market with their benefits, but they've also brought a more complex mix of combinations and strategies to manage across changing conditions. Through all of it, it's easy to overlook the consistent, economic performer - Leafex.
Leafex has been a reliable defoliant for decades and still earns its place in current programs. Whatever the weather throws at you, cool or warm, Leafex is the most consistent. It's the most effective way to defoliate drought stressed and frost affected cotton, and the most time-efficient way to dry out weeds within a crop.
Leafex is a physical desiccant. The active constituent is 300 g/L sodium chlorate, and it also contains calcium chloride as a fire suppressant. It dilutes readily with water - just add the required amount to the spray tank while filling.
It's a tried and true performer that delivers a desirable result with significant savings, and it controls re-growth where other options can fall short.
Add the wetter Steadfast to Leafex and you'll see the difference: quicker boll opening, minimal leaf freezing, more complete defoliation, and picking starting 3-4 days earlier. The label recommends adding Growth Steadfast at 100-120 mL per 100 litres - it works as a spreader, reducing the surface tension of the spray droplets so coverage is more thorough.
Apply to cotton two to three weeks before the anticipated picking date, and no later than 7 to 10 days before harvest. Thorough coverage of the plant is essential. Registered for use on cotton in QLD and NSW, by ground or aerial application.
Always read and follow the label before use. Refer to the current label and SDS for full directions, rates, restraints, and safety requirements.
